Ho ho ho Green Giant!

Cucumber status update:

They're growing like weeds and will soon outgrow their croissant box! Dangit!

I'm going to have to scheme some sort of replacement lid, I think. I should buy some peat pots, too, to transplant them into once they sprout their first set of real leaves.

The onions are starting to signs of growth, too, but the little green threads are nowhere near as much fun to watch.

Sprouts

The cucumber and onion seeds that we planted have already started to sprout! We put the greenhouses in the princess's room as her room faces south and gets the most sunlight. For our greenhouses, we used the big clear plastic containers that held croissants from the bakery at the grocery store. Ingenious!

So far the cucumbers are growing like gangbusters and the onions are just starting to show signs of sprouting.
It won't be long before we need to buy our other plants for the garden.

It will be interesting to see how the garden fares this year when we'll have it growing for the full season.

The eagle had landed!! (2012)

The captain headed off to the marina today to put the boat into the water while the princess, the wee lad, and I camped out at the dance studio during the princess's dance classes. This is the boat outside the studio.

For now, he's putting his boat in the "old" spot, until we figure out if we're going to be moving. The good news is that he remembered to put the plug into the boat, so it didn't sink to the mucky bottom when they launched. This is a good thing. I am pleased. Halloo Handy Dad!

They started the boat right away (they report there was a little difficulty the second time, but nothing that wasn't fixed by tightening down the connections on the battery) and Handy Dad suggested they head over to the cottage to put in a dock. That wasn't in today's plans, but why not!

They crossed the lake without incident, docked temporarily at the neighbour's, and got to work installing one of the docks.

The captain managed to snap a few photos of the property and interior, enough to put my mind at ease that the place is still standing and with no major damage.

He also showed me that the bulbs I planted in the fall are starting to sprout. That's so exciting!!

With a dock in, I'm really starting to think about when we can get back to the cottage for a stay. Darned dance is in the way!! I'm always so conflicted at this time of year.

I guess I need to start thinking about how to reconfigure the inside of the junkybunky, too. So much to do....

A wee update

We're home this weekend, which is a pleasant change from the back-to-back weekends of dance competition we've endured lately. It's nice to be home. I'm getting some gardening done that typically gets neglected in the blur from dance season into cottage season.

The princess and I spent some time planting seeds to start some of the plants for the veggie garden at the cottages today. We planted cucumbers and green onions. I've also got seeds for Swiss chard and carrots, but I'll plant those when we get to the cottage.

We've also been looking at materials to put on the living room roof. Right now, cottage-grade knotty pine panelling is winning. I'm not a fan of the orange pine, though, so the wood will need to be white-washed or painted before it gets installed.

The captain has also been busy. He pulled the battery out of the boat to charge it after it sat idle all winter. He seems to think he's going to be able to put the boat into the water tomorrow, but I'm skeptical. I don't even think Marvin at the marina knows where he's going to put us yet! It's all well and good to put a boat into the water, but you kinda need a place to put it once it's in, no?

I think the earliest we'll be back to the cottage may be the weekend of may 12th ish, which is our first weekend after the final dance competition.

I'm keen to get back. I miss the pace.

(this my first post composed on my phone. Fun times!)
